Jamshedpur Eye Hospital

History

In the 1950s, Dr KGS Chhokar, a well known Eye Specialist of Jamshedpur, initiated the idea of an Eye Hospital in the city with the objective of providing treatment for eye diseases and dissemination of information regarding prevention of eye disorders and blindness. To take the Project further, a Board of Trustees with Lady Roshan J Gandhi as President was constituted. The then Tata Iron & Steel Company Ltd, TISCO ( now Tata Steel), allotted a plot of land at Sakchi for the Hospital. The foundation stone was laid by Sir Jehangir Ghandy, Director – in – Charge, TISCO on 29 March 1958 and the hospital commenced functioning in 1961. Since 1973 it is registered under the Societies Registration Act.
